Hooftreat Plus FAQ

What is Hooftreat Plus?

Hooftreat Plus contains the biocide 2-Bromo-2 nitropropane-1, 3-diol. It includes a non-ionic surfactant to aid wetting, which enhances its penetration of disease-affected areas. A dye has been added to improve visibility. Most significantly, it has been designed to work consistently when challenged by a wet, dirty environment. The product is made by Ritchey plc.

What is it used for?

It is used as an aid to relieving the symptoms of general cattle lameness problems, particularly digital dermatitis.

How is it used?

The product is a liquid preparation and can be used via a footbath or hoofmat. Hoofmats can be supplied by Ritchey plc. It can also be applied topically, sprayed on to the affected foot in the parlour following cleansing.

Application rates?

Whole herd - a water dilution rate of 20:1. Topical application - in its neat form for cattle with severe clinical lameness.

How does it work?

Bromo-2 nitropropane-1, 3-diol is a broad-spectrum biocide; most useful where protection against bacteria and fungi is required in the ‘wet state. The biocide has an exceptional kill rate of many different families of bacteria, including the Pseudomonadaceae family. This family includes the sub-species of Serpens bacteria, which is associated with the skin condition, digital dermatitis.

On-farm trial results

On-farm trials have been carried out using footbath/hoofmat treatments with the dilute form. Producers have also tested product efficiency as a topical application of the neat liquid, to the hooves of cattle showing classic erosive lesions due to digital dermatitis. Both the above treatment methods have indicated that Hooftreat Plus is a significant aid towards helping to dry up the affected area and improving mobility.

Precautions

The biocide is non toxic, corrosive or an irritant in its presentation as a 4% concentrate. However as with any disinfectant, correct safety precautions should be observed when decanting or applying the product. Washing skin or flushing floor areas with copious amounts of water is advocated in cases of accidental spillage.
